Must-have 'fatbit' fitness gadgets can exaggerate your step count by 25% every day

They are the must-have gadgets for the health-conscious who try to go 10,000 steps a day.


 But new research shows activity monitors such as Fitbits be over estimating the number of steps a user takes with up to 25 percent.

In the tests detected some gadgets "movement" when volunteers sat at a desk typing or standing still wash or stacking books.

The gadget contains a small device called an accelerometer to detect movement, with the number of steps is often based on census arm movements back and forth, which can be misleading.

Results from the National University of Ireland Galway suggested some users who believe they have been tortured for up to 10,000 steps recommended today – roughly five miles – can really have reached only 7,500.

The researchers filmed 37 men and women and the reading of five different devices as compared with the actual activity is created.
