USDA expert has food safety tips for your Super Bowl party

Forget the so-called "5-second rule"-when it comes to food safety, experts say "2-hour" rule is one to remember.

You can leave the shelf-stable snacks such as pretzels and chips out of the Super Bowl Party guests all day long without worrying they will go bad, but for most other foods, including dips and salsas, 2 hours at room temperature is the limit, says USDA Archie Magoulas.

"It could vary--might have content can have sour cream, yoghurt, can have all sorts of things can be very durable," said Magoulas.

Magoulas said, if you want to leave a dip or salsa out of more than 2 hours, put it in a bowl of ice to keep it at 40 degrees or below.

With regard to hot foods like pizza or wings, warming them up to between 140 and 165 degrees to kill bacteria that may be present and keeping them warm until they are served, and by the way--"5-second rule" about the food fell on the floor??

Magoulas said this is a myth if you drop it, eat it.
