New Zealand hit by 'strong' 5.1-magnitude earthquake near site of deadly 2016 Kaikoura quake

New Zealand earthquake rocked just 5.1 degrees magnitude ' strong.


The earthquake hit North-East of Kaikoura on the South Island-not far from where the 7.8 large magnitude earthquake toppled 

buildings and killed two people in November last year.

The first earthquake Wednesday night described as ' moderate ', but has now been upgraded to ' strong ' by GeoNet.

It hit at a depth of 16 km at local time 23:21.

It seems that no one has been hurt.

Fire and ambulance services were called out after the earthquake.

More than 2,000 people felt the quake, with some to Facebook.

Dawn Hurst says: ' well, it's a little rattle! My bedside lamp metal began to confuse and hope will come up but nothing more. '

Alan Byde writes: ' the reason I'm on Facebook at 23 was the earthquake. 5.1 in Kaikoura. This mild vibrations here but due to quiet me. '
